Limiting Beliefs
We all tend to have certain beliefs about ourselves. The beliefs that empower us, and the limiting beliefs that dis-empower us. Those stories we tell ourselves about what we can and can’t do. Or the stories and beliefs about why we can’t do something.
One of the topics we discuss during the NLP training, is limiting beliefs. What people believe they are capable of, or not capable of as the case may be. We make excuses for why we cannot achieve certain things or why life is the way it is.
“The people who are crazy enough to believe they can change the world, are the ones who do.” Steve Jobs
What is the story you tell yourself?
The stories we tell ourselves about why we can’t do things, are simply that…stories. They say, “It is a bad economy,” “I did not get the same opportunities,” I am too white,” “I am too black,” “I am too short, “I am too tall,” etc. Or they say, “I don’t have money to…,” but they have money for smoking and drinking. “I can’t be my ideal size,” but they are not prepared to change their eating or exercise habits.
These are just more stories we tell ourselves to justify why we don’t have what we want. They are all limiting beliefs. You can re-write your story so that it serves you. You can create change in your life so that you can have the things you desire. You deserve to be happy. You simply need to be willing to change the setting of your sails. Coaching can help with that.
I can’t make money
This is a big limiting belief for many. However there is an abundance of money in the world. It may be true that somebody does not have much money at this particular point in time. That does not mean they can’t make it. It simply means they have not done what they needed to, to have it right now. Whether somebody stole it from them, or they lost it all, or whatever life’s challenge was. It is just a moment in time. The future is yet to be written based on our actions today.
They blame the economy. The same bad economy also mean that interest rates dropped in many countries. Example mortgage payments are lower. Instead of spending the money they save on their payments, some people are paying off their loans faster. Taking the situation and treating it as an opportunity.
“The same wind blows on us all. The economic wind, the social wind, the political wind. The same wind blows on everybody. The difference in where you arrive in one year, three years, five years, is not the blowing of the wind but the set of the sail.” Jim Rohn
The world is against me
Some people think the world is against them. They think that life happens to them. Life does not happen to you, it happens for you. Everything that happens in life is something to learn from. It is a continual educational process. Learn from it and create the life that you want.
You may remember, we said in the communication cycle article, that every experience we have is purely subjective. We get bombarded by around 11 million bits of information per second as that information comes at us via our 5 sense. We can’t possibly handle so much information consciously. We run that information through our internal filters of time, space, matter, energy, beliefs, values, attitudes etc. Then we delete, generalize and distort the information, to only take in around 134 bits of information.
This means that the situation that happens outside of us, is purely subjective. It is the way that you interpret that event, based on your own filters. The way you “see” that event and determine what it “means” to you. However somebody else could get a whole different meaning from the same original event. Some people lose their jobs and get depressed, others decide to do something different and become very successful. The same event and yet 2 different outcomes.
Change your limiting beliefs and you will change your results
There are a number of ways and reasons we can adopt limiting beliefs, however we are also able to change our beliefs to empower us. Thus changing that story we tell ourselves and the results that we get. Stop buying into the belief that you are not good enough or can’t achieve what you want. Start to challenge these assumptions and see them for the lies they are.
