What have you invested in your own personal development in the last 12 months?
Ever heard the saying, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.” Or said another way, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get, what you always got.”
This has been attributed to many people over the years. One thing they had in common is that they were all successful in their own right.
Invest in yourself before asking for a raise.
Some people think that they need to first get a raise before they work on their own personal development. That is like saying, “God, if you give me a harvest this year, then I promise to plant the seeds next year.” It is your responsibility to ensure you stay ahead of the game and stay the most employable if you are employed.
Rather invest in your own personal development and then go to your boss and say, “I have taken the initiative to improve my skills.” This is what I can offer you and the company. Then prove how you are an asset to your boss. Then you are in a much stronger position to ask for a raise or a promotion. After all knowledge is potential power.
Personal development can lead to business opportunities.
Have you ever felt that you really want to do your own thing, but did not feel like you have the right skill set? Or maybe you want to start your own business, but not sure what to do. By investing in your personal development you may even find that, once you have invested in your own learning, you actually have a new set of skills. You may have the ability and skills to go out and start your own business.
So my question to you is very simple, “What have you invested in your personal development over the last 12 months?” Have you simply sat at home watching T.V or have you done a course, read some trade magazines, researched new technologies in your industry or done something to move yourself forward that was not required. Doing the things that are required is easy. Taking the time to do and learn more than is required of you, now that is investing in yourself.
